How to edit "External email address" in Active Role. It's grayed out.

Is special permissions needed to edit "external email address" in active role 7.4 however I can edit smtp.

In order to edit 'External Email Address' you will need to delegate permissions to view/modify the 'targetAddress' attribute of a user object. You can add these permissions to an existing…

To elaborate a bit on Eric Hibar Jr. comment, in a Hybrid environment the on-premises AD TargetAddress gets replicated to the ExternalEmailAddress property of the equivalent Cloud object. So as Eric said, you would need to be granted access to edit that.
