Since it was established in 1889, Western Carolina University (WCU) has been bringing higher education and career opportunities to the western region of North Carolina. As a member of the University of North Carolina system, WCU’s enrollment includes more than 10,000 students from 38 states and 32 countries.

However, the university’s size and aging systems made it extremely difficult for the IT team to manage user profiles and system-access privileges for the students and staff. To continue to provide high-quality education to the community, WCU needed a way to enhance users’ experience, improve IT security, simplify password management, and increase user-account insight and control. To achieve these objectives, WCU needed to replace its identity management solution.

Using the Gartner Magic Quadrant for Identity Management and Access Governance, WCU selected One Identity for its identity governance and access (IGA) solution. One Identity’s suite of products aligned with the university’s existing Microsoft-centered infrastructure. This is when we, Immersion Technology Services, a long-time One Identity partner, were selected by the university to help deploy the new solution and to boost service and security by automating the university’s workflows. The project resulted in the removal of 70,000 inactive accounts and a 50-percent reduction in administrator accounts, as well as a 24-percent decrease in calls to the help-desk. With One Identity solutions – and Immersion Technology Services expertise -- WCU finally has a 360-degree view of all users in Active Directory and significantly cut costs due to a more efficient, insightful way of managing user accounts.
