Upgrade of Active Roles from 7.1/7.2 to 7.4 - Any documentation available

Upgrade of Active Roles from 7.1/7.2 to 7.4 - Any documentation available ?

  • Hi Sha187

The Active Roles 7.4.1 Quick Start Guide includes a section on upgrading from a previous version (7.x to 7.4.x) in section 6 (Upgrade of an earlier version)

You can upgrade from Active Roles 7.0.x or later to Active Roles 7.x using one of
    the following methods:
     * In-place upgrade - Install the latest version of Active Roles on the computer
       without removing the earlier version.
     * New installation with import of database from earlier version - Install the
latest version of Active Roles and import the database from the earlier
       version of Active Roles.

    NOTE:
     * To perform a clean installation of Active Roles 7.4, uninstall Active Roles 7.x
       before installing Active Roles 7.4.
     * Active Roles supports selection of custom installation path only during a
fresh installation. During an in-place upgrade, Active Roles does not support
       changing the custom installation path.

For information on importing configuration data from database of earlier version
of Active Roles, see Import Configuration under Upgrading the Administration
    Service.

Upgrading from Active Roles 6.9 version to 7.x version is a side-by-side upgrade,
which does not interrupt operations or affect the configuration of your earlier
Active Roles version. To ensure smooth upgrade to the new Active Roles version,
you should first upgrade the Administration Service and then upgrade the Web
    Interface.

Active Roles 6.x components are not used in the upgrade and neither are any
components from the earlier version uninstalled.

NOTE: Before upgrading to the latest version of Active Roles, the add-ons of
the earlier versions must be uninstalled.

    Do you have specific questions?

    Kind regards

    Stu

  • Thanks Stu for response.

For In-place upgrade - Install the latest version of Active Roles on the computer
    without removing the earlier version.

If there is some document/steps available for this or it it straightforward to upgrade to 7.4

  • Hi Sha187

I don't know how your Active Roles solution is deployed, but if is "standalone" (you can check this by checking Configuration\Server Configuration\Configuration Database, and checking if the database is listed as Standalone, Publisher or Subscriber), the upgrade is pretty straight forward, mostly just a few clicks through the wizard. There are some components of Active Roles which are not included in the upgrade, like SPML Provider, Collector and Report Pack, Configuration Transfer Wizard (basically the items in the "Solutions" folder in the Active Roles media).

If you have the Web Interface, MMC etc installed on different servers, dont forget to upgrade all instances.

Also dont forget to upgrade your Web Sites (via Configuration Center) after your uplift Active Roles.

You can however also perform a clean installation, and then migrate your configuration and management history from your old database.

  • Thanks Stu, I has updated in my test lab and it worked fine, but it has created 2 new DB on SQL , one for configuration and other History.
If in this new version SQL requirement is upgraded or we can still use old SQL server? can the same DB and history DB be used in the up gradation, I have 4 ARS servers, so need to do the upgrade on each one by one or need to take some precautions ?
