disable search field in IT Shop in the upper pane

The "search" option is part of the module VI_UserLogon, and within it the "search" container, which is itself included in the "user navigation" container.

I'd suggest to use a visibility condition to "hide" this option, similar to the following:

Thank you for this very fast and accurate response. 

I though, that maybe this solution is a bit too harsh, users do use this search field, but the objects returned confuse them. Could you please also share a tip how to reconfigure this search functionality to return specific 1IM data objects, eg not business roles?

You could just delete the table org as an extension from VI_common_search.
