Exchange online migration

Hello,

We are using OIM 8.1.3.

We have Azure AD sync Project.

We have an On premise Exchange which is not yet linked to OIM (via Exchange Connector). Mailboxes are created manually.

We want to migrate this On premise Exchange to Exchange Online.

I've read in a documentation that we need these module in order to do this migration.

· Active Directory Module
· Microsoft Exchange Module
· Azure Active Directory Module
· Exchange Online Module
· Exchange Hybrid Module

We have these connectors

· Active Directory Module
· Azure Active Directory Module
· Exchange Online Module

Already installed and sync projects related.

But

Do we need to install this connector : · Microsoft Exchange Module and setup a sync project before migration?

and what is the latest module is :

· Exchange Hybrid Module

and why do we need it?

Thank you

  • Hello,

For Microsoft 365, the Exchange Hybrid server/configuration is a necessary component for online migrations of mailboxes from the local Exchange information store to the Exchange Online information store. During your hybrid Exchange experience your systems will need to synchronize and be kept in sync., so that when a user with a local mailbox attempts to email a person that has been migrated the email will be routed properly.

Microsoft's expectation during a Hybrid migration is that management of identity and mailbox creation is actually initiated from the internal network. So without OIM you would begin by creating a user object in AD Users & Computers, open the Exchange Admin. Center in your browser and create a remote mailbox in Office 365 or a local mailbox. Following which you would trigger or wait for synchronization with the Azure AD Connect that would create the linked identity in Azure AD and the linked mailbox in the Exchange Online information store. So without OIM in there, you're moving across multiple services and control panels, needing to wait up to 30 minutes for sync, then more for the mailbox to complete creation or migration before you can finally get into the mailbox to add permissions for a manager's assistant.

One Identity Manager in use then needs to take over all that functionality and/or work within that functionality. As such you need to connect to Active Directory for creating the user identity, the Azure AD is needed because not all Azure AD settings are controllable through AD, the Exchange connector is needed because as I mentioned in a hybrid the expectation is that mailbox creation is initiated from inside your network, Exchange Hybrid needed to monitor/watch/sync, and Exchange Online is needed to manage the mailbox settings that must be changed online not local.
