Is the Job Service using an Application Server connection or a direct database connection?

we are using application server then database connection. 

Sorry for all the questions, but what 8.1 version exactly are you using (SP?)?

And, is your approval mailbox in Exchange OnPrem or Exchange Online?

We are using Exchange OnPrem

Sooty for the late response, but you could override the script that processes the approval inbox with your own version that utilizes modern authentication if you want. The script is marked as overridable.
